Questions and Answers
What Banks Participate?
Your paycheck can be deposited into a checking or savings account at any US financial institution.
When will my pay show up in my account?
Direct deposit give you access to your pay even faster than with a paper check. Your funds will be available no later than when your financial institution opens on the morning of payday. Sometimes your pay will be deposited even earlier, depending on when your financial institution processes the deposits. This is especially true when the normal payday falls on a weekend or holiday.
How do I know my pay has been deposited and how much was deposited?
You will receive a Payroll Deposit Advice, which will be sent to you via campus on payday. It will include all information currently contained on the check stub as well as the name of the financial institution.
Who is eligible for direct deposit?
All full-time and part-time Faculty, Staff and Graduate Assistants are eligible to enroll. This excludes Thomas and Mack casual labor, and student workers.
When will my direct deposit take effect?
For faculty, professional staff and graduate assistants, the form should be submitted to the Payroll Office by the 15th of the month. It will be tested (pre-note) that month and the direct deposit to take effect on the following month’s payday.
For classified employees, please submit the form to the Payroll Office by the 10th of the month. It will become effective for the pre-note period on the 25th of the month, and the direct deposit will take effect on the 10th of the following month.
Why does it take two pay cycles to start direct deposit?
A pre-notification transaction is sent to your financial institution prior to sending an actual deposit. The pre-notification process is a test to verify that bank transit numbers and account numbers are valid. Therefore, you will receive a check for the first payroll period in which your direct deposit is effective. All payments you receive thereafter should be direct deposit.
Can two employees have direct deposit to the same account?
Yes. However, both employees must be named on the account.
Is direct deposit secure?
Yes, there is no better way to receive your pay. Paper checks can be lost or stolen, making them subject to fraud. In addition, direct deposit uses the same security measures that companies and the government use to transmit money every day.
What if I change banks?
Simply fill out a new direct deposit enrollment form and submit it along with a voided check from your new account to Payroll Services, CSB, Room 244.
What is the ACH routing number?
This is a nine-digit code that identifies which financial institution your funds should be sent to electronically. This is printed along with your account number on the bottom of your checks (it is not uniformly printed on deposit slips).
For savings accounts, finding the correct ACH routing transit number can be confusing. We suggest you contact your financial institution for the proper transit number, as it may differ from your other accounts at your local branch bank. (If you opened your savings account outside of the Las Vegas area, contact the original branch of your financial institution where you opened the account. Often when you move, the ACH routing transit number for your savings account will remain with the original bank branch.
